California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Begins Northern California Correctional Officer Recruitment For Susanville PrisonsHolly Schirmer, Sr. HR Consultant for the Alliance for Workforce Development, Inc. received a call from Kasey Martinez, Delegating Testing, at High Desert State Prison, asking for assistance with a multi-county correctional officer recruitment. “The goal of the recruitment to hire and train officers specifically for the two Lassen County state prisons located in Susanville, CA,” stated MS. Martinez. Since finding candidates for the Lassen County area is difficult, the department's planning to offer the 16 week training (academy) here in Susanville in order to encourage local residents, residents of No. California and the Reno area to apply. In the past, the candidates' only option was to go to Galt, CA for the 16 week training. The Galt (location) academy made it impossible for otherwise eligible candidates to attend due to the geographical separation from family as well as other obligations.
Earlier this year, CDCR hosted the first local Susanville academy which was very successful. And, AFWD was able to enroll 17 correctional officer candidates into WIA training programs and assist them with various needs related to their employment with the department and attending the academy.
This time around, CDCR is looking to recruit 300-400 applicants for a Susanville academy projected to start on May 1, 2007. (Out of the total number recruited, only a small percentage actually completes the application process.) CDCR is going to be recruiting though out No. California and the Reno area immediately. Based on their needs and request, AFWD will be hosting a workshop in Susanville on October 12, 2006 from 10 am until 7 pm. The purpose of the workshop is to invite interested people in to explore a career in corrections and to complete the initial application. AFWD's role is to offer the workshop locations in the 4 counties, post and distribute the workshop notices, and to offer our services to job seekers during the workshops.
In addition and per her request, Ms. Martinez was provided with all of the NoRTEC county contacts and One-Stop locations, as well as Reno/Sparks so that workshops can be scheduled in all 10 NoRTEC counties and Reno, Nevada.
”We are very excited to be able to assist the Department of the Corrections and Rehabilitation,” stated Ms. Schirmer. “AFWD looks forward to providing both its business and job seekers services to assist candidates with the recruitment process, and the department in meetings it hiring goals.

NETWORKING NEWS
Networking continues to be a great success. We have changed the name to “Job Hunters’ Connection” in order to be more community friendly. The name change has made a great difference in attendance.
A recent success in Networking is Nolan Proctor. Nolan was laid off from the Apple Peddler in June of 2006. He was made eligible for our services as a dislocated worker. Nolan wanted to remain in the hospitality industry.
Nolan attended our Networking sessions faithfully, every week. On June 19th, Penny Artz from the County Cleaners attended the Job Hunters’ Connection as our guest speaker. Although Nolan had no interest in the Dry Cleaning business, his story struck Penny. A few days later I received a call from Penny with a referral for Nolan. She stated that she knew the kitchen supervisor at the Eagle Lake Village, the new assisted living facility in Susanville. Nolan was referred to Eagle Lake Village. The next week at Networking, Nolan announced that he had indeed been hired at Eagle Lake Village upon licensing and opening of the facility.
Nolan is currently working full time in the kitchen as a dishwasher at the Eagle Lake Village. He states that he loves his new job. Richard, Nolan’s supervisor, states he couldn’t be happier.
Walgreen’s Expands..Coming to Susanville, CA
Founded in 1901 as a neighborhood drugstore, Walgreen’s has grown to one of the country’s most recognized names in the pharmacy business. With 425 new stores opening each year and 7,000 planned by 2010, Walgreens is opening one of its newest stores in Susanville, CA.
The store has been under construction for the past six months and is scheduled to be opened on November 3, 2006. When it came time to staff the new store, Stave Hargis, Manager of the Susanville operation contacted Holly Schirmer, Sr HR Consultant with the Alliance for Workforce Development. With the assistance of the AFWD team, Lassen Career Network (LCN) has been the host location for all of the Walgreen’s local recruiting activities. Staff has helped job seekers complete their on-line application for employment utilizing LCN computers, provided the conference rooms for interviewing, scheduled interviews, and provided the computer lab for pre-employment skills assessment testing.
“With the store still under construction, having access to the services of the one-stop has been instrumental in helping us meet our hiring needs and open the store on schedule,” said Steve Hargis. “The one-stop provided us with job ready candidates and the means to conduct interviews and pre employment testing. We appreciate all of the assistance and thank all of the staff.”
Over 100 job seekers came into LCN to apply for jobs with the Susanville Walgreen’s store during the on-site recruitment. This was a very successful effort in meeting the needs of business, while providing viable jobs to the residents of the Susanville area. We are very pleased to be a part of the newest business opening in town!

WIA Success Stories
Mary Jean Scott was dislocated from Sierra Pacific Industries when its Susanville Division permanently closed in December of 2005 and Mary Jean was laid off.
Mary Jean had always dreamed of a job in law enforcement or administration of justice. She had completed some college with a major in criminology and desired to complete her Associate of Science degree in Administration of Justice at Lassen Community College.
In May of 2006 Mary Jean was very excited about being accepted to the very first Susanville Correctional Officer Academy held at the High Dessert State Prison grounds and Lassen Community College. Mary Jean worked very hard during the first local academy and would not have been able to attend if it were not held here locally and without the help of WIA funds and the Alliance for Workforce Development, who helped purchased her uniforms for Correctional Officer Academy.
Mary Jean began work at California Correctional Center (CCC) on September 1, 2006 and very much enjoys her job as a Correctional Officer. She plans to complete her A.S. degree in Administration of Justice while working full-time as a Correctional Officer.
